Ohio Online Casinos

Online Casinos October 2023

Sadly, Ohio online casinos aren’t yet available to play. This is because the future of casino gaming and legislation in Ohio hasn’t quite been ironed out yet.

Online Online Casinos: The Future

Often, US states have been quicker to legalize sports betting before casino gaming. This is the case for both online and offline wagering. Ohio is no different.

However, online casino revenue is guaranteed to be enormous. Currently, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are the only US states offering legal online casino gameplay to its people.

States have been eager to legalize sports betting ever since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned in May 2018. Now, there are more than 30 states are involved in sports betting, whether retail is legal, both retail and mobile are legal, or legislation is pending/in the process.

With Ohio sports betting launching fully (online and in-person) in January 2023, we would hope that the launch of Ohio online casinos follow soon after. This is a similar story for other states in similar positions, such as Maryland.

TimeTable for Legalizing Ohio Online Casinos

It is good to compare Ohio to other states that have recently legalized online casino play. This helps to determine the typical gap between sports betting legalization and casino legalization.

StateOnline Sports Betting LegalizationOnline Casino Legalization
PennsylvaniaOctober 2017October 2017
West VirginiaMarch 2018March 27, 2019
MichiganDecember 2019December 2019
ConnecticutMay 2021May 2021

The other two legal states, New Jersey and Delaware, have had legal online casino play since 2013. So, their comparisons are not as helpful.

The same bill often considers both online casino and sports betting.

So, as you can see, other states usually factor both online casinos and sports betting into the same bill. West Virginia was the only state not to do so. There, online casino was legalized one year after online sports betting.

Will Ohio Legalize Online Casino Gaming?

It is still too far in the future to tell whether Ohio will legalize online casinos in the next 12 months, 2 years, or 5 years.

However, legal sports betting and casino states are expanding at a rapid rate. Also, Ohio is the 7th-most populous state. This means that there is significant potential for revenue in the state if Ohio online casinos do get given the green light. From gambling tax revenue to increased visibility for land-based properties as a result.
