While we may not know exactly when sports wagering will go live in the state of Ohio, we have plenty of time to prepare for the day when Buckeye State natives can register for accounts.
There could be as many as 40 sportsbook licenses available to operators within the state of Ohio. Therefore, sports bettors will have no shortage of options. Our step-by-step guide will show you how to sign up for an account on some of the better-known sports wagering Apps.
How Do I Open an Ohio Online Sportsbook Account?
It’s as easy as it sounds. So, all you need to do is go to the App Store on iOS, or Google Play on Android. Then, sign up for the App of your choosing.
A “Sign Up” or “Register” button will display prominently on the interface. Click this to begin the steps you’ll need to follow.
What Information Do I Need to Give the Ohio Online Sportsbooks?
Ohio online sportsbooks have two main goals during the registration process. They need to determine whether:
- You are in fact who you claim you are
- You live in a state or area where sports wagering is legal
Therefore, the information they request will not be anything too difficult or challenging. And the requested field are fairly uniform from sportsbook to sportsbook.
For example, when you register for a DraftKings account, you’ll be asked for:
- Your full name
- Home address
- Date of birth
- Email Address
- Telephone Number
- Social Security Number
In most cases, the above information will be enough to register your account.
But, if the sportsbook still cannot verify your identity via this information, all is not lost. You may be asked for further proof of identification, such as a state-issued driver’s license or identification card.
How Secure Is My Information with the Online Sportsbooks?
Security and confidentiality are always concerns when making purchases or sharing information online.
And it’s one of the hidden benefits to so many states legalizing sports wagering. Now, bettors get to work with large companies with established reputations in the sports wagering area.
This is better than the old, ‘Wild West’ days of sports wagering, when gamblers had to work through offshore sportsbooks – often of dubious origins and featuring complicated means of depositing and withdrawing funds.
These days, US-based sportsbooks operate via secure, encrypted connections. They have valid gaming licenses, legitimate software, and seals of approval from the state’s governing bodies. Your information is as secure as it is with any other online transaction.
Can I Wager on Sports From Anywhere in the US?
These same sportsbooks use geolocation tools to ensure your presence in a legal betting state. The good news for Ohio residents is that the state is surrounded by states that have legalized sports wagering. You can bet on sports in-person and online in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana.
The better news is now, residents will no longer need to travel to one of those states to wager legally. They’ll be able to do so right at home in Ohio.
Typically, you must be physically located in a gambling-legal state to place a bet there – but you do NOT need to be a resident of the state itself.
But, simply being an Ohio resident will not be enough to allow you to wager in states that haven’t legalized sports gambling.
Can I Wager In Person? Or Just Via Mobile Phone?
It remains to be seen how many brick-and-mortar casinos will be available within Ohio.
The current Ohio state law states that casinos can operate in counties with fewer than 100,000 residents. According to 2020 Census figures, this describes 61 of the 88 counties in the state.
It seems there will be at least a few in-person casino options available to each Ohio sports bettor.

How to Sign Up With An Ohio Online Sportsbook
- Sign up for an account at the sportsbook of your choice. At the very least, the sportsbook will request your name, email, and a password you’d like to use when accessing the account. Many sportsbooks ask for other information such as address and phone number.
- Then, find the “Deposit” option. It’s usually quite easy to find at the top of the interface or within the front page of your online account. Some platforms use phrases like “Add Funds” or “Play Now” in place of deposit.
- Now, it’s time to choose your preferred method of deposit. Sportsbooks readily display these options via a dropdown menu in rough order of popularity and ease of method.
- Choose the amount you would like to deposit. The App sometimes displays minimums and maximums, but the interface will often prompt you with a common or a recommended amount ($100 is a common example.)
- Fill in your account information and preferred means of deposit.
- Await confirmation of your successful deposit.
- And now, happy wagering!
